An attachment to automate drill refurbishment – the latest addition to the Darex XT3000 Xpandable Tool Sharpener system – will be launched in the UK by workholding and machining equipment specialist, 1st Machine Tool Accessories Ltd (1st MTA).
Comprising an automated sharpening fixture, geared drill holder and control panel, the new module delivers faster and more accurate regrinding of drills up to 21 mm diameter by ensuring precise control of drill set up, sharpening loads and cycle times.
In operation, a blunt drill is loaded into the holder and its flutes are aligned. The collet is then loaded into the automated drive unit and parameters such as point angle, stock removal and number of drills to be sharpened are specified on the control unit. The operator simply presses the cycle start button to initiate the drill’s refurbishment at constant cutting speed and load.
“The new module represents an affordable method of bridging the gap between a manually operated machine and a fully automated CNC sharpening system,” says 1st MTA’s general manager, Catherine Kelly. “It provides fast payback and is easily integrated into machining cells. It also delivers consistent results regardless of operator skill levels, making the system ideal for multi shift manufacturing operations and extended production runs.”
Designed to grow with customers’ individual requirements, the XT3000 meets or exceeds international aerospace standards for controlling key geometry variation – ensuring precise drill performance. It also incorporates roller bearings for consistent accuracy over an extended service life and is supplied with two stainless steel chucks for sharpening drills up to 21 mm (13/16 in) as standard. The system is equipped with long-lasting, super abrasive CBN wheels for high speed steel and cobalt drills, or can be supplied with diamond wheels for carbide tooling. Both wheel types are zero-maintenance and will never require dressing throughout their life.
The new auto sharpening attachment extends and complements the capabilities of other XT3000 optional modules, including units for Morse taper, common shank, sheet metal point (Brad Point) and 90 degree point drills. A dedicated step drill attachment is also available, along with a large capacity attachment for drills up to 30 mm diameter (1.182 in) and a countersink module for regrinding Weldon type or single flute countersink tools.
All accessories are fitted to the XT3000 base by hand and adjusted without the need for any tools. The sharpener is powered by a rugged ¼ hp motor, which is rated for continuous use, and the system’s enclosed design incorporates a vacuum extraction port for clean and safe operation.
