Standard workholding setups such as vices and clamps never leave the workpiece completely free, making it neccessary to use multiple placement operations to complete the machining cycle. With MillTec Grip, the workpiece is always fully accessible on five faces, improving the tool path in all machining operations (face-milling, contouring, milling, and drilling). Set-up and change over times are drastically reduced, even with multiple work pieces.
With MillTec Grip the clamping force is distributed evenly over the entire contact surface without any compression or deformation in the workpiece. The Grip function magnetises the entire clamp to the machine bed effectively becoming part of the machine, virtually eliminating vibration, increasing tool life, improving surface finish, enabling faster feeds and speeds which in turn reduces cycle times.
All it takes to activate the system is a short electical pulse lasting just a few seconds. The power source can then be removed and the workpiece will remain clamped with no time limit, held safely and securely by the power of the high-energy permanent magnet. The system can be subsequently deactivated with a short electrical pulse.
Pole extensions can be installed on the system to raise the workpiece, which allows thru-drilling components. For irregular shaped parts, self-shimming pole extensions are available which can raise to the workpiece and self-adjust to any dimensional variance.
The Tecnomagnete MillTec Grip purchased by CNC Machining Subcontractor Bowyer Engineering paid for itself in just three months. Production manager John McNab said:
